Hammocks have long served as a popular type of porch
furnishing for casual resting or for sleeping, especially in hot weather. Where
did the Hammock Originate? The history dates back to 800 - 900 years. The
Central American countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador
and Costa Rica and South American countries like Brazil and Equador have a rich
and ancient heritage associated with hammocks.
In ancient periods kings and their ministry, used hammocks
while outing for relaxation and to get rid from any dangerous insects. The
earliest hammocks were woven from the bark of the Hamak tree. The hammocks
designs and materials transformed gradually over years. The most common
material was cottons. In those times, fashionable hammocks were not known. They
only hanged big cloth with 2 separate points and sleep on it. After time to
time the modification of those cloths changes its dimension and nowadays we got
different types of modern hammocks for comfort fullness.
Because of the extensive trade routes which were established
between the Indian nations of Central and South America, the hammock naturally
found its way into the heart and home of millions of natives. Hammocks were
soon being made from indigenous fabrics and materials which resulted in a
multitude of styles, which have evolved to the classic cloth/fabric hammock,
typical of Brazil, and cord and rope hammocks similar to today's styles. Today
worldwide over 100 million people use hammocks including Australia, Africa,
China, Philippines, South Pacific, and of course, Central and South America.
